Calming Lavender

Lavender essential oil benefits have been known for hundreds of years

Lavender is naturally antimicrobial and soothing. It can be helpful in reducing stress and high blood pressure. The flowers release a beautiful floral crisp fragrance that promotes a blissful night's sleep and a feeling of serenity.

During late June and August, the lavender blooms in the South of France are harvested from the plant, Lavanduala angustifolia. Lavender essential oil is obtained from the plant’s flowers and stems through steam distillation.

This versatile flower was  used by the Romans for its antiseptic and deodorizing properties. Lavender, derived from the Latin lavare (to wash)  makes it a perfect ingredient for our soap family!

A famous French chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé discovered the virtues of lavender essential oil after burning his hand badly during an experiment. He plunged his burned hand into lavender essential oil and  later claimed how quickly his burn healed and with very little scarring. This started a fascination with essential oils and today he is considered the father of modern aromatherapy.

Sleep is essential for our physical and emotional well-being. A number of clinical studies have shown lavender essential oil to increase the quality of sleep and reduce levels of anxiety. It is thought that linalool and linalyl acetate found in lavender’s flowers interact with receptors on nerve cells that give lavender its sedative and sleep-promoting properties.

Naked buys lavender essential oil from French producers in the Provence region in the South of France.

Please note, while lavender may help soothe mild anxiety, it should not be used in place of professional mental health treatment.
